RESEARCH METHODS / v0.2

From operations
to investment questions.

METHODS / DISTANT HILLS · REVISED 23 OCT 2026

Start with a real need.
Then test the economics.

Four questions connect store experience to retail technology: use case, economics, replication, and value capture. Each analysis distinguishes facts, assumptions, judgment, and what would change the thesis.

A FRAMEWORK WITHIN THE METHOD

Location Logic Migration Thesis

A framework by Distant Hills · v0.2. Unpack a “good location” into testable conditions for comparing stores, channels, and market expansion.

What travels is not a store,
but a set of conditions.

THE THREE PILLARS

Three conditions for a store to work

Demand density

Who needs what, and when?

DEMAND

Customer access

How do customers find and reach you?

ACCESS

Fulfillment economics

Can this demand be served profitably?

ECONOMICS
THE MIGRATION TEST

Real demand × Effective access × Viable economics

A conceptual relationship for structuring research, not a calibrated equation.
TAKE THE FRAMEWORK APART

Unpack a “good location”.

DEMAND

Who needs what, and when?

Start with demand that can convert, not just people passing by. Map the shopping mission, repeat frequency, basket, and time of day together.

Collect: footfall by time, target-customer share, shopping missions, repeat visits.
FROM A THESIS TO A TEST

Before asking if it scales,
ask what has changed.

  1. 01

    Reconstruct the original

Explain why demand, access, and cost fit together in the original market.

  2. 02

    Find the differences

Check streets, time, shopping missions, and supply conditions in the new market.

  3. 03

    Run a small test

Test the key assumptions with auditable observations before expanding the network.

A LIVING FRAMEWORK

A framework must face counterevidence.

Scope: store retail, delivery retail, and their migration across markets. This lens does not fully explain brand power, regulation, or organizational execution. If all three pillars appear sound and stores still fail, look for missing variables and revise the thesis.

Revision: v0.2 (23 Oct 2026) places the framework within a broader retail technology method and clarifies its limits. It is a working lens, not an empirically validated model. It cannot directly establish general AI capabilities or enterprise value.

HOW TO READ THE RESEARCH

Keep the evidence beside the conclusion.

FACT
Give the source, date, sample, and definitions. An undocumented observation is not presented as a fact.
ASSUMPTION
Expose inputs and formulas so readers can replace them. Example scenarios are not market benchmarks.
JUDGMENT
Show the reasoning, alternative explanations, and counterevidence; explain later revisions.
